Every year in January companies all around the country begin to send out employee tax information. With tax season hot on our heels, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is eagerly waiting for us to file our returns. In general, you file your return, pay, or receive the difference of what you owe, and by April 15th the tax season is over. However, you may receive a call from someone claiming to be from the IRS. If someone calls you and tells you they are from the IRS, they are lying to you and attempting to defraud you. Lucky for you, IRS frauds via phone call are easy to spot. You see, the IRS will only contact you through the postal system. If you get a call that you are suspicious of, hang up and go to IRS.gov. Their website is full of Q&A’s. Remember, never give out personal information over the phone. You worked hard for your earnings. Do not let fraudsters take advantage of you.
IRS Scams
The IRS never calls about taxes—if someone claims they’re from the IRS, it’s a scam, so hang up and check IRS.gov for the truth.
